#17 eastern white cedar
(Thuja occidentalis L.)
Eastern white cedar is a really slow growing tree. A small tree found on Niagara Escarpment in southern Ontario is about 700 years old! It is usually a small tree and can grow only to 15m high. Eastern white cedar grows mainly in swampy areas. The wood of eastern white cedar is resistant to decay. It can even be used for cedar-strip canoes. It is a common hedge tree. The trunk of the tree is often leaning and then curving upward.
