Northern red oak is the provincial
tree of Prince Edward Island and also the most common oak of eastern Canada.
It can reach up to 25 meters in height and is often planted as a landscaped
tree. It grows with other broadleaf trees, but is quite intolerant of
competition and shade. Oak is among the last species to lose its leaves
in the fall. The wood, which is very porous, was used for crossties, clapboards
and rough lumber.
