#8 red pine (Pinus resinosa Ait.)
Red pine is used commonly in plantations in Eastern Canada. It is a medium-sized tree that can grow up to 25m high. Red pine is very useful for windbreaks, snowbreaks and watershed protection. Natural stands are often found in areas that have burned as red pine favors a bare seedbed. Red pine is also commonly used for poles, pilings and structural lumber. The needles of this pine are easily misidentified as Austrian pine but whereas red pine needles will break when bent, Austrian pine needles will not.
