Dr. John A. Kershaw, Jr. CF, RPF, Forest Mensurationist

“The really great forester combines technical knowledge with idealism; even though he may be mistaken in detail, he must be enough of a thinker to fathom the national needs of the future.” – Theodore S. Woolsey, Jr. (Riding the Chuck Line)

People

As John Bell says on his website, it really is about the people. I have learned from some good people, taught good people, worked with good people and met many many good people. This page is all about them.

JAK with Burney Fischer, Indiana March 2007. Burney gave me my first real opportunity in forestry and was my first mentor. He has encouraged me and directed me. Through the years we have remained friends and I continue to learn from him.

JAK with Doug Maguire in the Valley of the Giants, June 2008. Doug is my second mentor, I am fortunate to have studied with him and worked along side him. It was a privilege to have been his first graduate student.

JAK with Bertram Husch, SAF National Convention, Winston-Salem, NC, November 2002. Completion of the 4th edition of Forest Mensuration with Bert has truly been one of the high points of my career. Bert is an amazing man!

JAK with Bert Husch, Chile March 2000. Bert was 75 years old and walking with a cane, but he kept up with us and beat most students around the woods. He added so much to our trip – Professionally, Personally, and Historically.

JAK with Tzeng-Yih Lam, Mt. Rainier National Park, May 2003. There are lots of good students, but there is only one Lam.

JAK with Tom Beers, Tom’s house in State College, PA, July 2002. Tom’s Forest Mensuration class sparked my interest in forest mensuration and biometrics and helped me find my niche in forestry. I still use my HP11C that I bought in 1983!

JAK with Kim Iles, Nanaimo, BC (Kim’s library). Who could ask for a better book collecting rival?

JAK with John Moser, Purdue University, March 2004. John inspired these pages. He taught challenging courses and never let you off easy. He, Tom Beers and I shared the last “Happening” at Lost Lake.

JAK with Otis Hall, Dave Hyink, Tom Lynch, and John Moser, Southern/Northeastern Mensurationist Meeting, Roanoke, VA October 2003. An across the generations photo. Otis Hall was John Moser supervisor, John Moser was Dave Hyink’s supervisor (and Tom Lynch’s) and served on my Master’s committee, and Dave Hyink served on my PhD committee. A great Purdue legacy.

JAK with John Bell, Hilo, Hawaii, July 2005 (Western Mensurationists meeting). John is truly one of the great educators in Forest Mensuration.

JAK with Bob Curtis, Western Mensurationists Meeting, Redmond, OR 2008. Bob is one of those critical links we have with the past. His 30+ years of experience in the Pacific Northwest makes him an invaluable asset to our profession.

JAK with Jerry Allen, Hilo, Hawaii (Western Mensurationists meeting). Jerry combined his skill in mensuration and woodworking to create some fantastic “Best Speaker” plaques. I am honored to hold one.
